About Outside Picks

Outside Picks is published by PlankByte LLC in McAllen, Texas. We write buying guides for people with a yard, a porch, a camper or a trail nearby, and we keep each guide to the handful of products that fit a specific constraint: a 10×10 deck, a weekend without hookups, a porch with one hook.

Who writes the guides

Jerry Plankinton writes every guide on Outside Picks and runs PlankByte LLC, the company that publishes it. His day job is building reservation and park-management software for RV parks and campgrounds, and he also runs a campground directory. That work keeps him close to how people plan, book and outfit a camping trip, which are the questions these guides try to answer.

How picks are made

Each guide starts from one constraint, such as a deck size, a power budget or a single porch hook, and keeps only the products that fit it. We compare the specs retailers and manufacturers publish and read what owners report after buying. Then we say which product suits which reader and what we’d skip. We don’t claim hands-on testing unless a guide says exactly what was tested. How we research has the details.

How the site makes money

Outside Picks earns affiliate commissions. When a retailer’s affiliate program has accepted us, its “Check price” links go through the Awin network, and the retailer may pay us a share of the sale. That never changes the price you pay. Links to retailers we have no program with are plain links and earn nothing.

No brand pays to be included or ranked, and the site runs no display ads or sponsored posts. The affiliate disclosure has the full terms.
